Tools of the Craft

There are a few basic tools of The Craft, also called witchcraft. These tools may be as elaborate or as simple as the witch chooses. It usually comes down to the particular witch's personal tastes and monetary budget.

The first piece of equipment is the Athame, (pronounced ah-tha-mee). It is a ceremonial knife used for ritual purposes and not for cutting anything. It is a tool of direction, and is used for casting the circle and evoking the elements. It is sometimes used for mixing any of the said ritual's substances-- like salt and water. It is used for marking these substances with the sign of the pentacle, and used for consecrating your equipment. Your athame is the one thing you should not share with anyone else. Because the athame is not used for cutting, it can be made out of anything you desire and even inscribed with magickal symbols. The athame corresponds to the element of Fire, or in some traditions Air, and it's corresponding direction is East. The athame represents the male energy.

The next most common piece of equipment is the Chalice. The chalice is representative of the female energy and corresponds to the element of Water. The chalice can be any shape, size, and made of glass, wood, or a non-toxic metal. It is used for mixing wine potions or the salt and water.

There is also the Altar. Your altar is where all of your magickal implements are placed. This is where most of all your undertakings of spell casting and ritual work take place. Your alter can be as fancy or as simple as you wish it to be. Many witches like to have drawers and/or cabinets with shelves built into the bottom of their altars. Others just use a simple table.

Other basic implements are, incense, salt, water, candles, herbs, pins, quill, ink, book of shadows(your spell book), a scrying mirror or ball, scented oils etc.

As any real witch will tell you, the real magick comes from within the witch themselves. Your tools are merely there to help to set the right atmosphere and frame of mind. Use what you have on hand. A basic black ink pen will work for writing your spells down. You can use a basic notebook for your book of shadows, and spells by the thousands can be found anywhere on the Net to use until you start making your own. A drop or two of black ink in a bowl of water works as an excellent scrying mirror.

The power of belief is everything. If you have no belief, then all the tools are useless. Remember the magick is inside of you. Once you realize that one little fact, then the power of the Universe is yours! Happy spell-casting and remember: Do as ye will harming nothing! For whatever you send out it will return to you three-fold!
