Shadow creatures, also called shadow people, shadow men, shadaes, or shadow beings are some kind of supernatural shadow-like creatures. Tales of these things are in both modern tales old folklore, as well as traditional Native American beliefs. They always seem to appear as dark forms, sometimes in the peripheries of people's vision, or in plain view. If noticed they will disappear, or fade into the shadowy corners of rooms and closets.

These beings are often seen outside on darkly overcast days darting through the darker shadows of trees, alleyways, buildings, etc. They seem to be drawn to places where violence has or is about to happen. Why this tends to be is a mystery as no one really seems to know what these things are.

Reports of shadow creatures are as common as the reports of people who see spirits or ghosts. But the reports about these shadow beings differ in that they are not reported as having human features like ghosts. Shadow beings are never seen wearing modern or period clothing, or even making an attempt to communicate.

Some folks have reported being chased, or more rarely, attacked by these shadow beings. There have been many reports of these shadow people just popping right into being in front of witnesses. They will stay there and just linger for several seconds and then disappear as fast as they appeared. Most eyewitnesses report that encounters are nearly always accompanied by feelings of heavy sadness and dread.

The myriad accounts given about these shadow people usually describe them as being a black humanoid shape with no discernible facial features.

However, there are several reports of these beings appearing to be child-sized, shadowy humanoids or shapeless, dark, black or gray masses that often change to a more human like form. Generally there are no discernible facial features, but sometimes these creatures are reported as having glowing red eyes.

Some other accounts given by people describe what appears to be a specter in the outline of a cloak, and the outline of wide-brimmed hat--much like the one's worn by preachers in the late 18th early 19th century. This last type is sometimes called the "hat-man" and is often a terrifying and malevolent apparition.
