Destruction Of Leviathan

In no less than over 250 freshwater lakes all over the world are reports of some very large, unidentified creatures, that in many cases seem to bear a striking resemblance to a dinosaur known as a plesiosaur. When one hears about such reports it instantly conjures up images of Nessie, one of the most famous, as well as Champ, or Ogopogo.

Every year there are scores of sightings of these strange creatures that are not reported by the mainstream press. These animals have been seen in different parts of Asia, Africa, North and South America, and Europe. The numerous islands dotting the continent of Oceania have also had their share of sightings of these elusive creatures as well. The archetypal description is that of a large creature with a thick body and a long, tapering neck. The head is most often reported as being either some-what snake or horse-like, although many other descriptions have also used other well known animals, such as dogs, to describe the shape of the head.

Some of the first recorded encounters with these gigantic beasts come from as far back as the European Dark Ages; with even older accounts coming from Africa, South America and even Asia. Tales of these creatures have been passed on in the oral traditions of Native Americans and their legends, historical records and ancient petroglyphs. There are hundreds of photographs, film footage and eyewitness reports. These reports are often dismissed by the mainstream scientific community who view them as nothing more than the products of hoaxers, people with over-active imaginations, or drug/alcohol induced hallucinations.

However, the near constant reports help boost the tourism trade and are loved by the tourists who flock ever year to many of these remote locales in the hopes of catching just a glimpse of one of these strange and elusive creatures.

Most believers and those who have gotten the rare glimpse say these animals look like the drawings of a dinosaur said to be extinct for thousands of years; the plesiosaur. Could it be possible that some of the sea dwelling dinosaurs survived the mass extinction of their land dwelling counterparts?

The sea is a vast and deep place, largely unexplored, so it does not seem to be an impossibility nor an improbability. Perhaps one day the mystery of these creatures will be solved. Then again, knowing the nature of humanity, these creatures would best be left alone to continue their existence in peace as they have for an untold years. As history has shown, humanty has the misguided belief that in order to study and understand something they need to kill it--even if the creature in question is more rare than an honest lawyer.

Instead, it may just be best to leave well enough alone. If there are such creatures from an age long past then leaving them to themselves would be the best thing mankind could do for them. After all, everyone needs a little mystery and magic in their lives to make life worth living.
